Volubilis

After Fes we headed back to Meknes and visited the ruins of Volubilis, about 15 miles outside the city.

The countryside is beautiful, with lush, green hills and hundreds of olive tree groves.

Visitors are free to roam around this abandoned city with no escort or guide. Amazingly, the mosaic floors are intact, the basilica is in good condition, and the donkey roaming the grass-covered streets will let you take a picture of him with no surcharge.

We were amazed that this place isn't as well-known as Pompeii, with its triumphal arch, several fluted columns, and collection of rare Roman and ancient Moroccan artifacts (which we saw at the Archeological Museum in Rabat).

Go ahead and Google it, or better yet, click here.
